Research

I am the author of Girls’ Feminist Blogging in a Postfeminist Age (Routledge 2015), co-editor of Emergent Feminisms (Routledge 2018) and co-author of Digital Feminist Activism (Oxford University Press 2019). My research on digital feminist cultures, girls’ media, and mediated celebrity has been published in numerous journals, including: Social Media + Society, New Media & Society, Journal of Gender Studies, Continuum: Journal of Media and Cultural Studies, and Feminist Media Studies. I received my Ph.D. in Media Studies from the University of Texas at Austin in 2013.

I am currently completing a SSHRC-funded project (2018 – 2021) that explores the politics of anti-Trump resistances across feminized media cultures. This research has been recently published in Signs: Journal of Women in Culture and Society and forthcoming (late 2021) in the edited anthology Anti-Feminisms in Media Culture (edited by Michele White and Diane Negra).

My new research/book project (2021 -- ) explores the cultural history of the North American feminist blogosphere from 2005-2015.

I welcome graduate students (both MA and PhD) interested in the following:

  • Feminist digital media cultures
  • Popular and celebrity culture
  • Girls' media and cultures
  • Historical and contemporary feminisms
  • Social activism and media

I welcome press inquiries on the following:

  • Social media, particularly in relation to gender, race, class, and sexual identities
  • Sexual violence and the media, particularly in relation to digital media
  • Girl and youth cultures
  • Contemporary feminisms
  • Popular culture and celebrity
