Profile

Dr. Susana Y. Kimura Hara joined the Department of Chemistry at the University of Calgary as an Assistant Professor in July 2017. Prior to joining University of Calgary, Susana was a postdoctoral fellow for two and half years in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of South Carolina and a postdoctoral research fellow for one year at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Susana obtained her M.S. and Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and B.Eng. in Industrial Engineering from CETYS Universidad in Mexico.

Dr. Kimura’s research interests are in the areas of drinking water treatment, analytical chemistry and toxicology. She is interested in the identification and formation mechanisms of unregulated disinfection by-products using advanced mass spectrometry instrumentation and techniques. She has a particular interest on the formation and toxicity of emerging disinfection by-products and contaminants of concern derived from oxidation and membrane-based technologies developed to remove contaminants from municipal wastewater effluents.

Dr. Kimura is affiliated with ACWA (Advancing Canadian Wastewater Assets), an alliance between The City of Calgary and the University of Calgary that contains a full-scale experimental wastewater research facility that feeds twelve constructed, replicate, naturalized experimental research steams for ecological assessments, and analytical laboratories for biological and chemical measurement.

Our research group is looking for enthusiastic undergraduate and graduate students interested in improving the safety of drinking water by characterizing the formation of contaminants and by-products formed during water treatment processes. Interested applicants please send your CV, transcripts, and contact information for two references to s.kimurahara@ucalgary.ca. Postdoctoral researchers eligible for external funding are welcome to contact the PI for opportunities.
