Research & Scholarly Activity

The Van Humbeck research group is focused on developing new catalysts and reactions systems that can address the challenge of site-selectivity organic chemistry. Using both organic and transition metal catalysis, we invent new approaches that predictably modify a single functional group in molecules where several competitive positions are present. Our initial work has focused on converting C-H bonds adjacent to azaheterocycles (an important pharmaceutical building block) into new C=O, C-N, and C-F bonds. Students will learn a wide range of synthetic skills, including air-free techniques, as well as moderns approaches to data acquisition and analysis using ‘Design-of-Experiments (DoE)’ tactics.
