Biography:

Guillermo is a Spanish Forest Engineer (MSc from the Polytechnic University of Madrid, 1990) who especialised in Remote Sensing (PhD from UPM, 2003) thanks to a fellowship in the European Space Agency (ESA, 1999-2000). He joined the Department in May 2006 as a Posdoctoral Fellow working in the Foothills Facility for Remote Sensing and GIScience under the supervision of Dr Geoffrey Hay, with whom he had been collaborating since 2004. In September 2008 he started working as a research associate in the same lab, this time with co-director Dr Greg McDermid, in a project related to remote sensing of biodiversity. Since July 2010 he is also an Adjunct Professor in the Department.

About me

Guillermo  is a Spanish Forest Engineer who specialized in Remote Sensing thanks to a fellowship in the European Space Agency (ESA, 1999-2000). Since then, Guillermo works in the development of theories and tools to automate the production of geographic information from remote sensing imagery. He became an Adjunct Professor of the Department in July 2010.

Research Interests:

Guillermo works in the development of theories and methods to automatize the production of geographic information from remote sensing imagery. The approach he follows involves the design of new image segmentation and classification methods that operate at several scales, based respectively on image morphology and multicriteria decision-making theory. An important feature of these methods is the usage of structural signatures (recurrent spatial patterns observable at certain scales that can be readily associated to specific landcover classes) in addition to conventional spectral signatures.
