Bio

Debi is an Assistant Professor of Marketing and has been at the Haskayne School of Business since 1992.  Debi earned her BComm from the University of Alberta and a Masters of Journalism from the University of Western Ontario.  Her PhD in Marketing is from the University of Strathclyde in Scotland.  

Before starting her PhD, Debi Andrus held marketing management positions for well-recognized Canadian companies such as Nortel, Ernst & Young and Facelle Company.  Debi has also taught at the University of Alberta, SouthWest Petroleum Institute in Nan Chung, China as well as at the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration in Vienna, Austria.

Debi teaches senior marketing options in both the undergraduate and graduate programs and on occasion teaches in executive education programs.  She has also been called upon to supervise students in other faculties.  Her area expertise is in strategic marketing, product management and creativity.

Debi’s research interests include strategic marketing, innovation, creativity and product management, specifically product recalls and quality assurance issues.  Due to her background in strategic marketing, Debi is a regular commentator on CBC Radio One and is quoted in regional and national business newspapers and magazines. 

Debi's research covers new product and product management issues and recently she completed the first study of its kind on product recalls in Canada.  The research study on product recalls was sponsored by the National Quality Institute. 

Debi has had a review in the Journal of Marketing and she has written teaching cases for and contributed to the top selling marketing foundation textbook in Canada.  In 2005/06, Debi earned an Outstanding Teaching and Learning Award from the Commerce Undergraduate Society.  She has also, in her career, won public speaking competitions.

Currently, Debi is a member of the WXN, a national professional women’s organization.  She is a former Director on the Board of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and a past-president of the Calgary Chapter of the American Marketing Association.  Debi was a committee member on the Calgary Economic Development Quebec Sister City Committee.  For the past three years, Debi has been a judge for the Canadian Business Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

Debi has been a faculty representative on the councils of EVDS, Communication and Culture and most recently the Faculty of Fine Arts. She is also a reviewer for the Social Science and Humanities Research Council.  Debi is a Tri-Council certified ethics reviewer and assists in both faculty and university ethics reviews.

She has presented her work at Birmingham University, London School of Business and was a visiting scholar at The University of Strathclyde.
