CHEM 541 - Biochemical Toxicology - Winter 2016

Focused on the diverse biomolecular mechanisms by which organic and inorganic pollutants adversely affect cell function examined at multiple levels of organization, from molecules to whole animals. Topics include how natural toxins exert toxicity, how toxins/light generate free radicals within cells, how the speciation of metals in the environment affects their bioavailability/toxicity, and the toxicity mechanisms that lead to homeostatic dysfunction.
This course may not be repeated for credit.

Prerequisite(s)

  • Any two of Biology 231, 233, 241 or 243, and Biochemistry 341 or 393, and Chemistry 311, 321 and 351.

Antirequisite(s)

  • Students may not receive credit for both Chemistry 541 and 641.
