Dr. Wilfreda (Billie) Thurston joined the faculty in the Department of Community Health Sciences, Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary, in 1991, and became an Emerita professor in 2016 following her retirement. She received a joint appointment in the Department of Ecosystem and Public Health, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in 2009. She served as Director of the Institute for Gender Research at the University of Calgary and Director of the Office of Gender and Equity, Faculty of Medicine and received the Association of Faculties of Medicine May Cohen Gender Equity Award in 2009. She remains a member of the Calgary Institute for Population and Public Health, University of Calgary. Her research interests included: prevention of violence against women, including collaboration on the highly successful EAAA rape prevention program; gender and culture as determinants of health; health of Aboriginal populations; and development and evaluation of health promotion and population health policy and practice. She received the Canadian Pubic Health Association Ron Draper Health Promotion Award in 2018.

Dr. Thurston is not available for supervision of new students.
