Bio

Dr. Jess Chua has been a faculty member of the Haskayne School of Business since 1979 and is a Professor Emeritus of Finance and Family Business Governance. Jess received his PhD in Finance from the University of Michigan, his MS in chemical engineering from Syracuse University, and his BS in chemical engineering from the University of San Carlos.

His two fields of research, reflecting his appointments, are family business governance and new venture financing. Within these two fields, he has published four books, two monographs, and over one hundred papers in academic and professional journals. The research is well-cited and has received awards from numerous academic associations, the most recent being the 2018 Greif Research Impact Award.

In addition to teaching and research, he has served the Haskayne School in various administrative roles; as a director of public and private companies; as a director of several professional organizations, and consulted for large and small companies. He also helped set up centres for family business research in Canada, UK, Italy, and China. For his contribution to management practice through his teaching, research, and consulting, he received the 1999 National Post Leaders in Management Education Award. He is very proud of having received the 2002 MBA Society Award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.
