Michael Maher was dean of the former Faculty of Management at the University of Calgary for 18 years. His vision and drive helped grow the former Faculty of Management into today’s well-regarded Haskayne School of Business and strengthen its ties to Calgary’s business community. A dedicated leader and proponent of community service, he has been a member of numerous management committees, boards of directors and community organizations.
During Maher’s tenure as dean, the business school reached many important milestones, such as establishing a full suite of business programs, gaining full accreditation from the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business, building a significant endowment fund, and realizing expanded support from the private and government sectors. Faculty members commented that Maher was a strong advocate of their visions for development of new initiatives, and he integrated strategic planning, fundraising and applied research between the community and the faculty. He recognized the importance of community-based business relationships with the faculty, so he worked to enhance involvement and linkages through community advisors and the Management Advisory Council.
International leadership and business program development has also been a focus for Maher throughout his career. As dean, he supported affiliated teaching, infrastructure development, capacity building, and academic and business exchanges in over 25 countries. Maher became a faculty member in Haskayne once his term as dean was completed. He teaches at the undergraduate, graduate and executive levels and his current research focus is corporate governance, and general and strategic management.
