Selected topics may include formation and breakdown of political structures: development of societies, cultures, religious and secular belief systems; developments in technological science and economies, anywhere on earth. LEC 1 MWF 09:00 - 09:50 Notes: This course examines the global impact of western technologies, military prowess, belief systems, institutions, and financial capital from about 1500 to the present. It will analyze the different results of, and responses to, western power and influence, including assimilation/domination of subject peoples and countries, total rejection of the West and a return to traditional non-western cultures/practices, and selective borrowings of western concepts, technologies, and institutions to preserve essential elements of non-western indigenous culture and ways of life. The course will also consider different scholarly explanations for the West's "rise" and global dominance in this period.
