HTST 432 - Fur Trade to Free Trade - Winter 2009
Canadian history in the perspective of its trade-oriented economy. Topics include the colonial staples economy, emerging trade priorities in nineteenth century politics and society, protectionism, preference and free trade theories, and tariff policy. Emphasis will be placed upon the social context of trade debates, Canada¿s ¿culture¿ of economic nationalism, infant industry protectionism, and later strategic trade policies in the contexts of crises, prosperity and globalization.

LEC 1 MWF 09:00 - 09:50 George Colpitts Notes: Study Canadian history from the perspective of its trade-oriented economy. Course topics include the hotly debated trade issues confronting 19th and 20th century Canadian politics and society. Students will examine how US Canadian economic integration, finances and trade tightened after WWI, and analyze the means by which natural resources, defence production, and trade diplomacy changed Canadian political discourse. Of special relevance will be discussions around Canada+s `traditions+ of economic nationalism, infant industry protection, British preference and, finally, free trade policy which emerged in contexts of crises, prosperity, and globalization. NOTE: All are welcome: Pre-requisites for this course have been waived.
