Notes: When has the north ever figured so importantly in Canada+s politics, resource economics and imagination than now? In fact, for quite some time. Discover the history of Northern Canada and the ways that northern people, the region+s wealth, and rich imagery have seized the interests of explorers, empires and entrepreneurs to the present day. Canada+s present northern issues find more meaning when students shift the history of the region from one of resource hinterland, to one of homeland, and learn, through Native oral history, critical reading of primary documents and new historiography the north and its fascinating past.

Notes: This course is a survey of the history of medicine and health care, particularly in Western societies, from antiquity to the present. The aims are (a) to sketch main subject lines pertinent to the evolution of modern medicine in its cultural contexts; (b) to examine the ways in which the body, health and disease were conceptualized; (c) to examine the changing role of "the healer" and the "patient"; (d) to track the evolution of some of the major institutional and societal frameworks of medicine and health care; (e) to analyze the ways in which human societies and their healers interacted in the face of medical challenges. As this course is designed as a 1-year course, ending with the national History of Medicine Days conference, attendance during the full 1-yr. course is expected (full credit given for the 2 half-courses).
