Research and Teaching

Dr. Ken MacMillan teaches and researches the history of early modern England and the Atlantic World, circa 1500-1800. He is a 3M National Teaching Fellow, Canada's highest post-secondary teaching recognition. His books about the English empire include John Dee: The Limits of the British Empire (2004), Sovereignty and Possession in the English New World: The Legal Foundations of Empire (2006), and The Atlantic Imperial Constitution: Center and Periphery in the English Atlantic World (2011). More recently, he has published books on order and disorder in early modern England, including Death and Disorder: A History of Early Modern England, 1485-1690 (2020) and Stories of True Crime in Tudor and Stuart England (2nd edition 2022).
