PHYS 211 - Mechanics - Fall 2007

Modules M1, M2 and M3. M1 Motion and Kinematics. Motion in one dimension, including displacement, velocity and acceleration; relative motion; graphical analysis of motion. M2 Forces and Acceleration. Newton's laws of motion; vectors; statics with forces; vector kinematics; uniform circular motion and other curvilinear motion; non-inertial reference frames. M3 Energy, Momentum and Torques. Work and energy; gravitational energy; conservation of mechanical energy; friction; systems of particles and momentum conservation; statics involving torques. Prerequisite: Pure Mathematics 30 or Mathematics II (offered by Continuing Education).. Note: Physics 30 is recommended as preparation for Physics 211. Note: Credit for both Physics 211 and Physics 205, 217, 221 or 231 will not be allowed. Note: Not open to students with 70% or higher in Physics 30 and Pure Mathematics 30 and 60% or higher in Mathematics 31, except with special Departmental permission.
This course may not be repeated for credit.

Hours

  • H(4-2T)

Notes

  • Physics 211 and 221 differ in their prerequisites, but cover the same material and have the same examinations and tutorial quizzes. Physics 211 has an extra lecture hour per week to deal with certain topics from High School Physics and Mathematics 31 and, Not open to students with 70% or higher in Physics 30 and Pure Mathematics 30 and 60% or higher in Mathematics 31, except with special Departmental permission
