ASTR 209 - Introduction to Astronomy II - The Cosmos - Winter 2021

A comprehensive, descriptive overview of the universe outside the solar system. The electromagnetic spectrum; stellar spectra; distance determinations. Origin and evolution of stars; white dwarfs, neutron stars and black holes. The interstellar medium. Dark matter. Galaxies and quasars. The Big Bang. The fate of the universe. Possible field trip to the Rothney Astrophysical Observatory.
This course may not be repeated for credit.

Antirequisite(s)

  • Credit for Astronomy 209 and either of Astronomy 205 or Astrophysics 213 will not be allowed. Physics Majors, Astrophysics Majors, Natural Sciences Physics Concentrators and Environmental Science Physics Concentrators are not permitted to register in this course.
