About Me

Hello,  this is Sazzad ([sɑd͡ʒd͡ʒɐd̪]). I’m a Linguistics PhD student at the University of Calgary. I was first intrigued by linguistics during the final years of my undergraduate program at Government Hazi Mohammad Mohsin College where I took a few introductory linguistics courses. Then, I went on to pursue MA Linguistics in the US at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) which now brought me here at U of C for the final degree. At SIUC, I had the experience, among many, of working with native Telugu speaker in Field Methods.

As for my research area and interest, I’m more of a phonetics person in general- with interest in seeing how the invariance theory in speech perception would work with some of the speech sounds in Bengali. I’m also interested in doing descriptive acoustic phonetics for Bengali. Basically, the physics i.e., acoustics, aerodynamics behind the speech sounds fascinates me. Dr. Stephen Winters is my supervisor for the PhD. He is also the director of the Phonetics Lab at the University.

I’m also a Teaching Assistant to Dr. Winters in Ling 341 course. During leisure, I enjoy movies, cooking, outing, and Badminton. I’m also a fan of poetry. So, I’m interested in learning Urdu for reading and writing as it has a vast field of poetry.
