I am a PhD candidate in a co-tutelle agreement between the University of Calgary and the JL-Universität Gießen in Germany. I completed my BA in English and MA in German at the UofC, and have also worked here as a sessional instructor since 2005. I seem to keep getting drawn back to Calgary between long academic and work stints in Freiburg, Dublin, Leipzig, Jena, Erfurt and Berlin, where I currently live.
I am writing a dissertation on the narrative treatment of memory acts in the prose of Christoph Hein, under the supervision of Dr. Carsten Gansel (Gießen), Dr. Florentine Strzelczyk and Dr. Cheryl Dueck. I hold a SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship and was awarded the Chancellor’s Challenge Scholarship in 2016 and 2017. I speak English, German and some very basic Spanish. My research and teaching interests are in aspects of narratology, East German literature, and German film – especially those of Christian Petzold and Andreas Dresen.
Narrowing down my literary favourites is difficult, but a short list would include Franz Kafka, Max Frisch, Günter de Bruyn and Thomas Glavinic.
