Notes: The course will discuss issues relating to Israel national security from its inception to the present. It will explore and analyze the foundations of Israel national security, and will deal with selected issues pertaining to Israel's national security such as the complex relationship between Israel foreign policy and its national security policy; the concept of pre-emptive attack, from the 1956 war to the attack on the Iraqi nuclear plant (1981); Israel's current security problems and its engagement in low intensity conflict; the making (and missing) of peace- from the failed Arab-Israel rapprochement in the 1950s to the peace agreements with Egypt and Jordan; and the development of Israeli- Palestinian struggle throughout the years. |
