Dennis McKerlie In Memoriam (1948-2014)

The Department of Philosophy mourns the loss of its colleague and friend, Professor Dennis McKerlie, who passed away May 8th at the age of 65.

Dennis first came to our department as an undergraduate student. He completed his BA Honours degree in philosophy in 1970 and then his M.A. degree a year later (supervised by John Baker). Dennis went on to earn his Doctorate of Philosophy from Oxford University in 1977 (supervised by J. L. Ackrill). In 1984 he returned to the University of Calgary to take up a tenure-track appointment as an assistant professor of philosophy. His promotion to professor came in 2006.

Dennis was a distinguished scholar, best known for his ground breaking work on egalitarianism. His final book, Justice Between the Young and the Old, was published by Oxford University Press in 2012 just as Dennis became ill.

Respected for his scholarly work and attention to students, Dennis was well liked and appreciated as a colleague and friend. Conscientious and careful in administrative work, considerate and thoughtful in interactions with students, staff, and colleagues, Dennis’s humour and humanity helped make our department that much better a place to belong. He is greatly missed here.

The Department will host a two-day conference on Dennis's work Feb 28-Mar 1, 2015.

There will be a “Celebration of Life” for Dennis McKerlie on Thursday, May 22, 2-5pm at the Eden Brook Funeral Home located at 17th Avenue SW and Lower Springbank Road, Calgary.  Online condolences may be a contributed here: http://parkfuneral.sharingmemories.ca/siteContent/memorial.html?personId=253454&source=memlist
