This course will focus on translation as a social practice. A part of it will deal with dubbing and film subtitling. Special considerations will be given to the translation of literary texts. The idea of Voice-Over alluded to in the course title refers precisely to the social and dialogical dynamics, including ideological decisions, involved in interpreting and translating. Taking this into account, the course objectives are twofold: 1. To discuss currents concepts and trends in translation studies. This will be done by a careful reading, explanation, and discussion of a number of texts. 2. To complete a translation project serving as a basis for the discussion of cultural and linguistic elements relevant to the practice of translation. This project might include the translation of a chapter from a novel or the translation of movie sections; or the analysis of an existing translation or of a dubbed or subtitled film. All texts will be chosen by the professor or in consultation with the professor. Results and finding are to be presented orally to the class towards the end of the semester and as an essay.
