Notes: Romantic Opera. This course presents an overview of selected operas and ideas concerning opera during the period from 1830 to 1914, the period of time during which Romantic opera established itself as today's operatic canon. The course offers an historical and analytical account of selected operas from the Italian, French, German, and Russian traditions, focusing especially on works composed between 1850 and 1900, the most fertile years in terms of the composition of today's major repertory works. Operas by Bellini, Donizetti, Verdi, Wagner, Bizet, Massenet, Mussorgsky, Tchaikovsky, and Puccini will be discussed. The course will involve listening, history, analysis, as well as term paper assignments. |
